Canon G7X Features and Performance Review
The Canon G7X sports a sleek profile with an uncluttered front, containing the 4.2x optical zoom lens, as well as a small LED that functions as both a self-timer lamp and an autofocus illuminator. The top plate features the power on/off button, shutter release, pop-up flash, and zoom rocker. The shooting mode dial sits atop the exposure compensation dial but both are easily accessible and offer a good grip. Also present on top are ports for the speaker and stereo microphone.
Build and Buttons
The rear of the camera houses a record button for video capture, playback and menu controls, and a rear control ring. This control ring includes a center button surrounded by a four-way controller for adjustment of drive mode, focus mode, flash, and display.
Note that the compact build of the body means that a two-handed grip is the wisest choice when shooting, not only for the safety of the camera but also to get the best use out of the controls. The right side of the body features the Mobile Device Connect button for connecting mobile devices, as well as various connector ports. Finally, the base maintains the standard setup with a memory card and battery compartment door.
Display and Functions
Equipped with a 3.0-inch 1,040k-Dot tilting LCD touchscreen, the Canon G7X offers the ability for users to take that perfect selfie or capture that great action shot. The 180-degree upward tilt capability allows for flexible composition from a variety of angles. Touchscreen operation is intuitive and convenient, providing quick access to settings and customization options, as well as Touch AF, a touch-enabled focus and shutter release. Easily zoom in or out on an image in playback mode or swipe from side-to-side to view more.
The highlight of this LCD screen is its excellent clarity and brightness, allowing for usage even under the glare of harsh sunlight — perfect for sports or nature photographers. Thanks to the stunning quality and function of the touchscreen, the lack of an electronic viewfinder isn’t even an issue, as the touchscreen performs just as well, if not better.
Sensor, Resolution, and Zoom
The Canon G7X features an incredibly powerful 20.2MP 1.0-inch high-sensitivity CMOS sensor and DIGIC 6 image processor, both elements of which work together to provide excellent results even in low-light settings. Pumping speed through the camera is the processor’s responsibility, allowing for High-Speed AF and a full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 6.5 frames per second. The Canon HS System allows for stunning photos regardless of the lighting situation, capturing all of the subtle details while actively reducing noise throughout the ISO range of 125 – 12800.
The G7X’s incredible 4.2x optical zoom lens allows for the capture of nearly any type of situation and setting. Thanks to its 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-100mm, this lens makes any type of shooting — wide-angle, telephoto, macro, and so much more — quick and easy.
In this Canon G7X review, it must also be noted that the high-speed autofocus operates on a 31-point system. Easily focus on an expansive landscape or focus in tight on smaller objects with great flexibility. Achieve focus the moment you aim the camera at your target and capture clear images each and every time. Select individual focus points or different frame sizes, depending on the shooting situation. Even activate Star Mode in order to best achieve eye-catching images of the night sky.
Lastly, we can’t wrap up the Canon G7X review without mentioning its video capability, which allows capture of Full HD video at 60 frames per second. Record quality audio with the built-in stereo microphone. Due to the Internet-friendly MP4 format, video captured on the G7X will be easy to upload and a pleasure to view. Additional features include built-in Wi-Fi for instant transfer of both photos and videos right to social media sites, mobile devices, or computers. When the camera is connected to a mobile device, remote control is available, allowing the user to program the self-timer, activate the flash and zoom, release the shutter, and display Live View at the touch of a button.
Canon G7X Price and Extras
The Canon G7X is priced at approximately $597. This shoot-ready configuration includes the camera itself, NB-13L battery pack, battery charger, wrist strap, and a one-year limited warranty.
